Anger Management

Recently, the disturbances of disqualification in Asian Olympics draw the international attention, and people in Taiwan stand up for Taiwanese taekwondo athletes. Both Yang Shu-chun (楊淑君) and Hsia wen-huang (夏文皇) lost their qualifications in the games. I was shocked that the same situation will happen again in such an open-door sport event.

The news of Hsia wen-huang was reported just a few days ago; what caused his disqualification was that he attacked the Afghanistan athlete excessively, and his competitor was in a coma at that moment. However, it is ridiculous that the Afghanistan athlete seemed perfectly well after the judge announced that he is the winner. Of course Hsia’s coach made a protest at once, and finally both of them lost the chance to compete in the following competitions.

In Yang's case, it was the Korean Filipino judge that umpired her disqualification. Because of the Korean Filipino judge, people in Taiwan who support Yang Shu-chun all boycott South Korea. I love Korean stars, especially a group called SHINee, and I share their news with my parents all the time. Yet, my parents start to get a little bit angry at me after the incident of Yang Shu-chun broke out. According to the news report, many shop owners reject or break the Korean products, and people refuse to watch Korean programs and soap opera out of rage. As far as I am concerned, this kind of deeds is somewhat irrational. I do not understand why the adults around me always think that if I keep pursuing my favorite Korean stars that means I do not have the patriotism.

Now, let’s put political suppression aside, focus on the whole process and countermeasures. After doing some Internet research, I find that World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) and Taiwan national team have different explanations for the incident. I do not know which version is the right one; nevertheless, it is certain that the arguing point is on the electronic sock. In order to restore the truth, the emergency plan for Yang and the disqualification is to watch the video tape of the game with all the judges right away. The evidence can prove everything, and tell us who is innocent.

  1. Since it’s hard enough for Taiwan’s athletes to win medals in the international competitions, it seems way much ridiculous when Yang Shu-chun was disqualified and eliminated abruptly for attempting to cheat when she was so close to the gold medal when competing against a Vietnamese opponent. According to all the information that we get from the media, it’s so obvious that Yang was set up by either the judge or the China government that controlled everything behind the stage. For being annoyed by this unjust judgment, lots of Taiwanese even take the opportunity to develop their patriotism to an extreme extent by breaking down all the electronic devices which were import from Korea.

However, it’s a really irrational action in my opinion for we shouldn’t give vent to our rage on all the Koreans. To decrease the public animosity, Yang tried her best to tell many news outlets that her disqualification had nothing to do with South Korea. In fact, Yang is only apologizing for the burning of the flags and other misbehavior that out of the brewing anti-South Korea sentiments. But the news reporter misunderstood Yang’s words and distorted her statements into Yang apologized to South Korea for all the Taiwanese people. Undoubtedly, the report aroused public indignation in Taiwan right away and they tool blame on Yang for questioning her how can she be the representative for all the Taiwanese people? I can’t help but sympathizing with Yang more for she has to take the pressure of the public opinions and still fighting for her innocence at the same time.

    1. Though Yang Shu-chun does not win the gold medal; however, the government still treats her as a gold medalist. President Ma ying- jiou orders Sports Affairs Council to give her 300 million as a reward. Nevertheless, Yang was a disqualified contestant, so she does not have the qualification to get the money. In order to solve this problem, the 300 million was donate by civil foundation and given by the vice-chairman of Sports Affairs Council. For me, I don’t think it is a good solution because the 300 million should be used in a better way, such as helping those who are in need. The giving of the reward seems to be a method to maintain the surface of government. Actually, the government does not take any constructive action to help Yang.

I don’t know that Yang burned the flags, this news astonished me. Our topic is talking about anger management, and it seems that Yang doesn’t possess a high Emotional Quotient. Burning flags is sometimes an insult. I think the first priority of Yang’s reaction to this unfair judgment is to be rational. If she does not stay calm, things will easily get worse and out of control.

  2. First of all, I would like to clarify that it’s not Yang who burn down the flags. The Korean flags are burned down by some irrational Taiwanese people who possess excessive patriotism. In response to question one, the reaction of people around me was quite calm. However, some of my friends who study in Korea do encounter some problems. For instance, since the anti-Korea sentiments are raised intensely, they are often questioned about why Taiwanese hate us Koreans so much by their Korean friends recently. The more sympathetic situation is that they are despised by their own friends in Taiwan as well only because some of their names on Facebook are written in Korean.

When facing any emergencies, acting as a sober-minded person will be very important. If I were Yang’s dearest friend, I would send someone to smoothen Yang’s negative emotions at the first place so as to figure out the truth of the disqualification. In addition, gathering all the information such as pictures and videos to prove that Yang is innocent is also necessary and lodging a protest to the disqualification right on the spot.

    1. I misunderstood your words. No wonder I didn’t see any report about Yang burnt the flags. You are right. It is vital for us to act as a sober-minded person when facing emergencies. Yet, it seems that most of the Taiwanese can’t do that. Especially when it comes to the patriotic fanatics, they deny everything relates to Korea . I pity those Taiwanese people who live in Korea . They are unwelcome to both Taiwanese and Korean.

In Yang’s case, figuring out the truth of the disqualification is the top priority. I think we reach an agreement of gathering evidence right away to prove her innocence.
