Learning Log 3

Date: 1/24-26
Part: Page32-53
Reflection:

The part I read today is mostly about clashes between the Franks and the Van Daans. Hiding in the Secret Annex, both of the two families had to be gingerly. It is possible that they would be nosed out by neighbors or workers downstairs only because of a little sound. Because of such atmosphere, the two families’ nerves were frayed. I think that’s why they squabbled that often. Besides, people living in an airtight space would feel extreme pressure. Anne once wrote: “Not being able to go outside upsets me more than I can say.”

When talking about the Van Daans, Anne’s childishness showed up. What she wrote in her diary was totally egoistic. She scarcely introspected, and talked ill behind people's backs. But I think the adults had to introspect first. Since they quarreled a lot and even scolded Anne in front of Anne herself. Children always imitate adults. The grown-ups should set a good goal, but they didn’t. There’s no wonder Anne would write a lot of negative words in her diary.

According to her diary, Mrs. Van Daan said: “Anne is terrible spoiled” because Anne turned a deaf ear to her sermons. She was indeed spoiled by her Father; however, I think there’s another possible reason why Anne acted like that: hormone. Teenagers who are at their rebellious phase are just like that; Anne thought that she was no longer a child, so there was no need of adults’ preach anymore.

During these 2 months, the three youngsters, Margot, Peter and Anne, still try to study hard. At that time, they were still full of hope in their heart; all Anne had wrote were: “After the war, we can… A year later, we can…” Anne was still dreaming then. She imagined that she was on vacation; things seemed not too bad to her. She believed her life would back to normal in the near future.
