Reflection:
The relationship between Anne and her mother was abject. Anne’s mother
wanted her to be a good wife and loving mother, but that’s not what Anne
thought; she wanted to be more than that. Also, her mother always blamed her in
front of everyone, which made her feel Humiliated. “Mama is always carping on
me, especially on the table.” She stated more than twice that she loved Father
a lot more, and she couldn’t stand Mother. It’s normal that a girl will have Electra
complex. Yet in Anne’s case, she seemed too extreme. However, a year and a half
later, she added her own comment: “I’m surprised at my childish innocence…I can
understand the mood changes and comments about Margot, Mother and Father…It embarrassed
me greatly to read the pages dealing with subjects that I remember as being
nicer than they actually were.” I can see that she had already grown more
mature.
“I feel wicked sleeping in a warm bed, while somewhere out there my
dearest friends are dropping from exhausted.” Anne’s Jewish friends were taken
away in droves to the camp. She could do nothing for them but fearfully hiding
in the Secret Annex. “The Germans are generous enough when it comes to
punishment.” No one dared to help those poor Jews and resisted Germans. Under totalitarian
rule, even Germans themselves trembled with fear.
Miep sometimes told them the sad news about Jews outside. “We
thought it best to stay as cheerful as possible.” After hearing those horrible
deeds that Germans did to Jews, Anne started to feel a little bit uncertain
about the future. Every time when Anne laughed cheerfully, she suddenly thought
of those sufferers outside, “Am I supposed to spend whole day crying? No, I
can’t do that.” Under such situation, Anne chose to live earnestly every day
instead of being full of remorse.
