Learning Log 2

Date: 1/21-23
Part: Foreword-32
Reflection:

Foreword of The Diary of a Young Girl mentioned that there are two different versions of Anne’s diary: version A and B. The former is the original diary that she wrote to herself; the latter is the edited version. The motivation why Anne started to edit her diary is also mentioned: one day in 1944, Gerrit Bolkestein announced in a radio broadcast that he would like to collect eyewitness accounts of the suffering of Dutch people. At that year, Anne was only 15, starting to edit the diary she had kept since 1942. Thus it can be seen that Anne’s patriotism is strong. One of the plots in the movie also shows that Anne is a faithful patriot. Anne was persecuted because she was a Jew. However, she said to her father, “I don’t want to be a German.”

Learning Log 1

Plan:
This winter vacation, I decide to read a novel: The Diary of a Young Girl. I will separate the whole book into 14 parts (about 25 pages per part). After finishing one part, I will write down my thought about that part. Doing this plan can help me in many ways. I can read and write English everyday, so I won’t be unfamiliar with English after this winter vacation. By doing so, I can also change what I thought into words, and this is the main point I want to improve. Four years in university, there must be many essay questions waiting there. No matter in English or Chinese, I want to strengthen my ability of getting my thought well in order and writing it down clearly.

Euthanasia

For decades, the issue of whether euthanasia should be legalized has long been debated. People who approve of the legalization of euthanasia say that euthanasia can not only reduce patients’ pain and suffering but also economize the use of medical resources. However, as far as I am concerned, I do not assent to euthanasia. There are three reasons why I stand for this position.

It's not you, it's me.

In these days, I find that people tend to shy away while questions touch on their privacy or secret. Few days ago, my friend would like to show me a short film she shot with her mobile phone. At first, I watched the screen with her while she was searching the short film. All of a sudden, she screamed out and took her phone away from me. I had no idea what had happened then, so I kept asking her, “What’s wrong? Is there something you can’t show me?” But she didn’t give me an answer, and shy away from my questions with an abashed smile.

Strawberry Generation

▲Picture from:

1: Sir! Why did you fire me?
2: Strawberry generation is not welcomed in our company.
3: Nonsense! Which part of me looks like a strawberry generation?
4: Tell me! Which part!
Footnote for "strawberry generation": the post 1980s, who grow up in a protected environment and are considered unable to endure hardship. A word from Taiwan.

When people born in the 80’s were still in their teenage year, they were labeled as “Strawberry Generation”. And now it is our (people who born in the 90’s) turn to be called with the same name. What are the traits of Strawberry Generation? The following lists the familiar points which are used as the description of the 80’s or 90’s youngsters: low endurance, low stability, insufficient ability, hylicism, hedonism, irresponsible, and the last one is an idiom “fastidious and demanding but inept”.
